reading journal for Nov 11th/Dec 2nd/Jan 13

Film Journal No.1 due on Nov. 11 Friday, 5pm via Email on 2 films:

Laborer’s Love勞工之愛情, Dir. Zhang Shichuan, 1922; Never Weaken, Dir. Harold Lloyd, 1921[available at YouTube] (details to be given later)

Write a 300-500 word reading journal (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, and 1” margins all around; refer to Chicago of Manual Style; see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/01/) focusing on assigned reading for the previous month. Don’t be overly concerned with grammar (although spell-check will be helpful!), but do put a lot of thinking into your reading journals since they will be key to fruitful discussions in class and even your final paper.

Please submit the Journal to the lecturer’s email address maran@lit.nagoya-u.ac.jp with the subject “READING JOURNAL I/II/III”. I’d send out confirmation email once your assignment is received. Late submission is not accepted unless emergency happens.

Format
Include the following information at the top of each assignment:

Your Name
Course Title
Submission Date
Reading Journal Essay # [you should write either 1 or 2 here; not just #!!!]

Title of article  (CMS format)

You should engage with both the film assigned by the lecturer, and the related reading(s) listed in our syllabus—one of which MUST be the required readings.

You are expected to not only review specific part of film history, and the films in relation to that part of film history (such as early Chinese cinema with the 1920s' production etc.)/film culture (such as in the case of the stardom of Ruan Lingyu etc.); also, you should be able to present your own interpretation and viewpoints (further relevant analysis of film shots/scenes/aesthetics/styles etc. will be welcomed but not a must).
