ABOUT READING JOURNAL

Reading Journal: Due on May 22 (Mon); June 22 (Thurs); July 24 (Mon)

Write a 300 word reading journal (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, and 1” margins all around; refer to Chicago Manual of Style format style; see http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html; Google for more; OR DOWNLOAD THIS) focusing on assigned reading for the previous month (assignment for May 22nd to review readings till Week 6; June 22nd to review readings till Week 10; July 24th for readings until Week 15). Don’t be overly concerned with grammar (although spell-check will be helpful!), but do put a lot of thinking into your reading journals since they will be key to fruitful discussions in class and even your final paper.

Please submit the Journal to the lecturer’s email address maran@lit.nagoya-u.ac.jp with the subject “AFH READING JOURNAL I/II/III”. I prefer WORD document (unless you haven’t installed WORD). I’d send out confirmation email once your assignment is received. Late submission is not accepted unless emergency happens.

Format
Include the following information at the top of each assignment:

Your Name
Course Title
Submission Date
Title of article

You should engage with TWO reading(s) as listed in our syllabus—one of which MUST be one of the required readings. You are expected to review, evaluate and even critique one or several RELATED theoretical concepts (such as keywords; concepts proposed by scholars) and/or arguments (much detailed explanations); no need to survey ALL readings covered; pick up a specific topic/angle/framework. Instead of simply paraphrasing and repeating the authors’ ideas, you should be able to present your own interpretation and viewpoints. (further relevant analysis of film shots/scenes/aesthetics/styles etc. will be fine but not a must).

Note on Plagiarism:
Plagiarism: A writer who presents the ideas of words of another as if they were the writer’s own (that is, without proper citation) commits plagiarism. Plagiarism is not tolerable in this course or at Nagoya University. You should avoid making quotes or drawing on figures from nowhere—you must provide sources of reference for quotation and/or citations you use in the paper. This applies to images and media clips as well. Failure to observe this would risk being charged of plagiarism. [All assignments/papers will be checked with professional software]
