Final Paper: Due on August 3rd Friday
Write a 1500-2000 word essay (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, and 1” margins all around; refer to Chicago Manual of Style (http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html) [Works Cited or Bibliography is required]
THINK WELL before working on your arguments; unless you are to write about film festival network, in your final paper, one of the films you are writing about should be from the film list in our syllabus (refer to the list); at least two references will be from our required readings; remember: you are always welcome to quote extra sources (preferably academic ones).
SUBMISSION: Please submit the essay to the lecturer’s email address maran@nagoya-u.jp with the subject “Final Paper New Perspectives”; the document title should contain your name. I prefer WORD because it is easier to comment and share online. But other formats are possible. I’d send out confirmation email once your assignment is received. Late submission is not accepted unless emergency happens.

You are expected to engage certain concepts (such as the keywords proposed or elaborated on by scholars, e.g., realism/xianchang etc.; or important themes brought up in each session such as first-person documentary; urban culture and cinema etc.) and/or arguments/theoretical frameworks (much detailed explanations) examined in the course. You do NOT have to cover each and every topic explored throughout the whole semester; focus on ONE specific topic/angle/analytical framing and illustrate your ideas with concrete analysis.
You should be able to present your own interpretation and viewpoints; you can work on literature review covered in your previous reading journals.
Note: films that are beyond the syllabus could be used for comparison. Please talk to Ma Ran for other possibilities.
