IMPORTANT:
In this project, you could work with TWO films, namely Centre Stage (a semi-biopic of Ruan made in the 1990s; includes both archival footages and Maggie Cheung’s reenactment of some of Ruan’s best performance, a must see) and Goddess; could focus on either of them—attention could be paid to 30s Shanghai cinema, Ruan’s stardom, and if you are interested, it would be great to see what you think is “new” with the biopic of Ruan, especially regarding how it might help you to consider in which manner her screen persona/real-life story register the idea of “fallen woman”.
