TAKE HOME PROJECT (THP)

Due Date: Dec 21st (Wed), 5pm

Please submit the project (preferably in WORD document) to the lecturer’s email address maran@lit.nagoya-u.ac.jp with the subject “Take Home Project AFH”. I’d send out confirmation email once your assignment is received. Late submission is not accepted unless emergency happens. EARLIER submission is possible.

Guiding idea: For the whole semester, we have compressed the (East) Asian film history into several lectures and screenings, yet more wonderful films might have been ignored and are not mentioned/discussed in detail. It is a pity. This THP therefore encourages you to re-discover films that are not screened/addressed in our class but are of importance for us to approach pre-1945 Asian Film History.

In this THP, you are required to
1)     Discover and research on ONE or TWO pre-1945 Asian films (if 2 films, you might want to emphasize their connections/similarities etc.) related to any historical period navigated through in our class, preferably those mentioned in our reference materials and those that could still be accessed via various medium (could be the examples I used in class, like Red Heroine, 1929);

2) Write a 300-word film review of this film, and please emphasize its production context and significance. Although NOT a must, images/screen grabs of the film are welcomed if possible; bibliography is a MUST too, to indicate which sources you have used to formulate your discovery, and discussions;

3) Based on this project and its region + period, you will work with your classmates who are working with similar region + period and present together on JAN 19th in class.  More details later.
